Carl Jung was a Swiss psychologist and psychiatrist who founded analytic psychology.

Jung developed many concepts including extroverted and introverted personality types, the collective unconscious and is still influential in psychiatry today.

Here are some powerful Carl Jung quotes about life.

1. “There is no recipe for living that suits all cases.”

Jung believed that everyone needed to live their own true life as themselves and if they did not then their psyches would suffer.

In his book ‘The Undiscovered Self’, Jung argued that a lot of man’s problems were caused by “man’s progressive alienation from his instinctual foundation”.

2. “Faith, hope, love, and insight are the highest achievements of human effort.”

In today’s world, we can see the importance people place on material things.

Jung believed that the ultimate aim of a person was to realise their true self, and only then would they be able to live a happy and fulfilled life.

3. “Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness.”

As Jung said, the days are as long as the nights and perhaps it is not possible to be happy unless we have experienced sadness also.

4. “The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.”

Jung believed that living your authentic life was the only route to a fulfilling and contented existence.

He spoke a lot about man finding his true self and the various parts of a person’s personality that have to be acknowledged and resolved for this to happen.

5. “It all depends on how you look at things, and not how they are in themselves.”

Perception is a wonderful thing, we all come at situations from our own perspective which can color how we interpret it. Jung explained, that our behaviour is shaped by our previous experiences and our future aspirations.

We can perceive the same situation in a myriad of different ways. The important thing is to recognise this when we make our assumptions.

6. “Loneliness does not come from having no people around.”

Many of us know what it is like to feel lonely, even when we are in a crowd of people or surrounded by friends.

Jung believed that we all need someone that we can tell our most private thoughts and feelings to.

7. “Your heart knows the answer.”

Jung spoke at length about our subconscious and conscious selves, and that we should learn to listen to that inner voice that tells us whether we are on the right path in life or not.

8. “You cannot change anything unless you accept it.”

You often hear people say that you can’t help someone unless they want to help themselves.

This is particularly true of addicts and Jung believed that it was not possible to change your situation unless you recognised it and accepted it.

9. “We are not what happened to us, we are what we choose to become.”

It was always a theory of Jung’s that environment played little in shaping our personality.

Instead, once we acknowledge our foibles and faults, it is possible to become whatever we want to be. Nature and nurture need not hold us back.

10. “Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.”

Jung proposed that the only way to truly know oneself was to look inside and examine our closest feelings and desires.

We cannot improve or reach our state of selfhood by looking externally, the answer will always lie within ourselves.

Emotional Intelligence

The scientific definition of Emotional Intelligence (EI) is: The ability to monitor one’s own and others feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and actions.

Meng’s more concise definition is:

Emotional Intellligence is the collection of emotional skills

 

He goes on to say, all skills are trainable, therefore Emotional Intelligence must be trainable.

How do you train Emotional Intelligence? 

Meng explains three easy steps to train Emotional Intelligence:

  1. Attention Training: Using Mindfulness to bring your mind to a state that is calm and clear and to do it on demand.
  2. Self Knowledge and Self Mastery: Ability to understand your emotions in high resolution and begin to see them objectively. The understanding that I am not my emotions and my emotions are not me.
  3. Create Useful Mental Habits: Specifically pro-social mental habits such as Kindness.

Here is your Homework

While you are at work, once an hour, look around the room. Pick someone and for 10 seconds think about that person, and wish that person happiness. Don’t say anything or do anything, just think your wish for the person.

The next hour, pick another person and do the same.

Watch what happens to your own attitude, your own inner happiness.

Shawn Achor is brilliant in this funny and inspiring TED talk. A two minute a day for 21 days recipe for happiness and success.

It’s not necessarily the reality that shapes us, but the lens which your brain views the world that shapes your reality.

Shawn Achor attended Harvard and was grateful to have been admitted. His assumption was that everyone that was accepted at Harvard would feel the same way; however that was not the case. What he found was that 90% of our long term happiness is predicted not by the external world but by the way your brain processes the world.

The Happiness Advantage

He goes on to describe “The Happiness Advantage” which is, when your brain is in a positive state it will perform significantly better than at a negative, neutral or stressed state. Your intelligence rises, your creativity rises, your energy levels rise. To raise somebody’s level of positivity in the present, then their brain experiences “The Happiness Advantage.”

There are ways that you can train your brain to be able to become more positive. In just a two-minute span of time done for 21 days in a row, you can actually rewire your brain, allowing your brain to actually work more optimistically and more successfully.

Here’s how, for the next 21 days take two minutes a day and do the following:

  1. Write down three new things that you’re grateful for.
  2. Journal about one positive experience you’ve had in the last 24 hours, this will allows your brain to relive it.
  3. Exercise teaches your brain that your behavior matters.
  4. Try meditation, to teach your brain to focus. Meditation allows your brain to get over the cultural ADHD that we’ve been creating by trying to do multiple tasks at once and allows our brains to focus on the task at hand.
  5. Random acts of kindness are conscious acts of kindness. The first time you open up your inbox, write one positive email praising or thanking somebody in your support network. Spread the happy.

And by doing these activities and by training your brain just like you train your bodies, you can reverse the formula for happiness and success, and in doing so, not only create ripples of positivity, but a real revolution.
