Teaching Children Mindfulness

gh-mindfullness-gsGoldie Hawn recently spoke at an event called Dreamforce in San Francisco where she shared her insight on mindfulness and teaching our children how to thrive as a skill.

Cultivating social and emotional skills that draw from cognitive neuroscience, positive psychology and mindful awareness training to help children prepare them for a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world. Hear what the data is telling us about how to enable children to be able to navigate 21st century challenges while maximizing opportunities for success in life and a bright future.

Teaching Children Mindfulness

Look and imagine a future differently. Look at the opportunity to understand how we can improve our lives, our hearts, our spirit, our health, and our relationships in every way thru the practice of mindfulness.

Goldie Hawn shares her story of being 11 years old and how seeing a film that was traumatizing.
At a very young age Goldie was asked “What do you want to be when you grow up?” and her response was:

I want to be happy.

As her career grew she started to feel that she was moving away from true self, that which made her happy.

In 1971, she was initiated with Transcendental Meditation (TM) and she started meditating. After practicing TM for many years, Goldie continued to study more and went on to study the brain connected to meditation.

Our reality is created by what we think, what we do, and the choices that we make.

Humans are a rare breed; we have metacognition, the awareness and understanding of one’s own thought processes. We get to see who and what we are doing.

After the 9/11 attacks, she knew that our lives, our world would never be the same. It would not have the kind of freedom that we had before. This brought her back to when she was 11 and felt the trauma.

There is a way to mitigate the fear and frenzy of the mind. We now understand the effects of Mindfulness, Mindfulness attention, meditation, call it what you will.. focused attention can calm us down, calm down the limbic system so that we can make cognitive decisions without all the emotions that drive us that are negative.

One in five of our children has a mental disorder of some kind. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for people 15 to 24 years of age. They are sad, lonely, stressed, and have been given no tools to mitigate any of their fears, their anxieties, their stress.

Over 500,000 children are doing MindUP™, which is a program that incorporates Mindfulness. The program teaches kids to understand their brain, to strengthen their attention and optimism. It is designed to give them tools so they can flourish, the best they can. Children need to have joy in their classroom, a sense of optimism. The teachers are trained differently, learning how Gratitude changes the brain, how habituating positive thoughts changes the brain. It’s a dance for evolution.

There is no wrong answer about Mindfulness, no wrong answer about tasting and smelling because we are all amazingly different. Embrace the diversity of all of us.

In the classroom the kids do Gratitude journals, which is an enormous benefit to their minds and hearts. Research has shown that journaling about Gratitude has pulled people out of very depressed states.

Today is the first day of the rest of my life. Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Every day is a new day, every day is a birthday.

The one person you need to challenge to become better in life for you, and your loved ones, and your job, is to go to the “University of You” and become the best human being you can possibly become.

Search Inside Yourself: The Unexpected Path to Happiness

Mindfulnes - Seach Inside Yourself Meng shares science, timeless wisdom and stories focused on ways to reduce stress and increase well-being, heighten focus and creativity, become more optimistic and resilient, build fulfilling relationships, or just be successful.

“The secret of happiness is be on the giving end of a kind thought,” he says. And if you practice kinds thoughts, you create kindness as a habit and you become a kind – and happier – person.” ~ Meng Tan

Search Inside Yourself: The Unexpected Path to Achieving Success, Happiness (and World Peace)

chade-mengtan-card Meng is an early Google employee, the engineer that helped build Google’s first mobile search service, and headed the team that managed Google’s search quality.

But today he’s Google’s personal and spiritual development guru. His official title is “Jolly Good Fellow (Which nobody can deny).” It’s on his business card.

Emotional Intelligence

The scientific definition of Emotional Intelligence (EI) is: The ability to monitor one’s own and others feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and actions.

Meng’s more concise definition is:

Emotional Intellligence is the collection of emotional skills

He goes on to say, all skills are trainable, therefore Emotional Intelligence must be trainable.

How do you train Emotional Intelligence?

Meng explains three easy steps to train Emotional Intelligence:

  1. Attention Training: Using Mindfulness to bring your mind to a state that is calm and clear and to do it on demand.
  2. Self Knowledge and Self Mastery: Ability to understand your emotions in high resolution and begin to see them objectively. The understanding that I am not my emotions and my emotions are not me.
  3. Create Useful Mental Habits: Specifically pro-social mental habits such as Kindness.

Here is your Homework

While you are at work, once an hour, look around the room. Pick someone and for 10 seconds think about that person, and wish that person happiness. Don’t say anything or do anything, just think your wish for the person.

The next hour, pick another person and do the same.

Watch what happens to your own attitude, your own inner happiness.

Teaching Children the Power of Gratitude

Gratitude Kids
Teaching children the power of Gratitude is so important and often not a part of daily life. This short video shares how simple a concept is, a good lesson for all of us actually.

Gratitude Kids

The Happiest people are the ones that…
Have an attitude of Gratitude

So what does that mean?

They are happy when…
The sun is shining.
When the rain is pouring.
When the wind is blowing.
And when the sky is snowing.

They are happy…
When they are exercising.
When they are singing.
When they are eating.
The list is endless.

These Grateful people are even happy when…
They clean their room?!?

What!
How could this be true???

All I can say is try it!
And you will feel the same way too!

Magic!

Try it with us.

Think of something that makes you blue,
and try and find something happy within you.

Having Gratitude
takes a lot of practice.

So…

Once a day think of something
that you can be happy for,
and there will be more and more,
sooner or later.

Have a Happy Day!

Nine Lessons I learned from Dr. Wayne Dyer

One of our great teachers, Dr. Wayne Dyer, has made his transition. His physical presence will be missed; his light shines brightly within us now and always. Eternal Love for him and his family.

“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” – Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

Wayne Dyer - Teachings2

Nine Lessons I learned from Dr. Wayne Dyer

  1. On Gratitude: An attitude of gratitude will take you a long way. It is good to be in awe of all that you have attracted into your life and the more you are grateful for that – the more that will flow freely into your life.
  2. On Judgment: An objective of our life is to find a way to free ourselves of our need to judge others. This is the work of our ego and judging others prevents us from seeing the good in them. There is no value in judging others poorly. As we see others, we also see ourselves.
  3. On Feelings: Take full responsibility for the emotional states that you choose to embrace each day. No one can make you feel any different than you choose to feel on any day. You choose your emotional state.GS Academy Logo
  4. On Kindness: No one was ever hurt by practicing random acts of kindness. There is no difference in the words “giving” and “receiving.”
  5. On Prosperity: Act confidently with a “knowing” that you already have all of the resources you need to succeed. It is only natural to have abundance and prosperity in your life.
  6. On Opinions: You must be independent of the opinion of others. You control yourself and how you act on a day to day basis. No one can make you into what you are not. You are responsible to no one for your actions and thoughts except yourself.
  7. On Intentions: Choose your intentions carefully, our intentions create our reality. We each create our own personal realities by what we focus on and intend to happen for our experiences.
  8. On Abundance: Seize the opportunities that knock on our door every day. Embrace the possibility for abundance.
  9. On Trust: Focus on what you want to attract for your life. Trust in the perfection of your life. Trust in yourself and in doing so, you trust in the very wisdom that created you. You already are complete, whole and perfect.

Dr. Wayne Dyer, may your light continue to shine bright in all of us. Your earthly presence will be missed, your lesson shared will continue on.

The Happiness Advantage

Shawn Achor is brilliant in this funny and inspiring TED talk. A two minute a day for 21 days recipe for happiness and success.

It’s not necessarily the reality that shapes us, but the lens which your brain views the world that shapes your reality.

Shawn Achor attended Harvard and was grateful to have been admitted. His assumption was that everyone that was accepted at Harvard would feel the same way; however that was not the case. What he found was that 90% of our long term happiness is predicted not by the external world but by the way your brain processes the world.

OnDemandCourses

The Happiness Advantage

He goes on to describe “The Happiness Advantage” which is, when your brain is in a positive state it will perform significantly better than at a negative, neutral or stressed state. Your intelligence rises, your creativity rises, your energy levels rise. To raise somebody’s level of positivity in the present, then their brain experiences “The Happiness Advantage.”

There are ways that you can train your brain to be able to become more positive. In just a two-minute span of time done for 21 days in a row, you can actually rewire your brain, allowing your brain to actually work more optimistically and more successfully.

Here’s how, for the next 21 days take two minutes a day and do the following:

  1. Write down three new things that you’re grateful for.
  2. Journal about one positive experience you’ve had in the last 24 hours, this will allows your brain to relive it.
  3. Exercise teaches your brain that your behavior matters.
  4. Try meditation, to teach your brain to focus. Meditation allows your brain to get over the cultural ADHD that we’ve been creating by trying to do multiple tasks at once and allows our brains to focus on the task at hand.
  5. Random acts of kindness are conscious acts of kindness. The first time you open up your inbox, write one positive email praising or thanking somebody in your support network. Spread the happy.

And by doing these activities and by training your brain just like you train your bodies, you can reverse the formula for happiness and success, and in doing so, not only create ripples of positivity, but a real revolution.

Please disrupt the endless barrage of bad news reported by the media by sharing this with your friends, right? We can all use a little more happiness.

Six Steps for Forgiveness

Forgiving others is essential for living a beautiful life.  Your experience of someone who has hurt you, while painful, is now nothing more than a thought or feeling that you carry around. These thoughts of resentment, anger, and hatred represent slow, debilitating energies that will dis-empower you if you continue to let these thoughts occupy space in your head. If you could release them, you would know more happiness.

Six steps to forgiveness and living a beautiful life:

Step 1:  Understanding YourselfAffirmation-Forgiveness4

Whenever you’re upset over the conduct of others, take the focus off those you’re holding responsible for your inner distress. Shift your mental energy to allowing yourself to be with whatever you’re feeling — let the experience be as it may, without blaming others for your feelings. Don’t blame yourself either! Just allow the experience to unfold and tell yourself that no one has the power to make you uneasy without your consent, and that you’re unwilling to grant that authority to this person right now.

By taking responsibility for how you choose to respond to anything or anyone, you’re aligning yourself with the beautiful dance of life. By changing the way you choose to perceive the power that others have over you and you will see a bright new world of unlimited potential for yourself and you will know instantly how to forgive and let go of anything.

Step 2: Take Responsibility for Your Part

Avoid thoughts and activities that involve telling people who are perfectly capable of making their own choices what to do. In your family, remember that you do not own anyone. The poet Kahlil Gibran reminds you:

When you blame another you are giving your own power away, because you are placing the responsibility for your feelings on someone else. People in our lives may behave in ways that trigger uncomfortable responses in us. However they did not get into our minds and create the buttons that have been pushed.Forgiveness Course

Taking responsibility for our own feelings and reactions is mastering our ability to respond. In other words we begin to consciously choose rather than simply react.

Removing blame means never assigning responsibility to anyone else for what you’re experiencing. It means that you’re willing to say, “I may not understand why I feel this way, why I have this illness, why I’ve been victimized, or why I had this accident, but I’m willing to say without any guilt or resentment that I own it. I live with, and I am responsible for, having it in my life.”

If you take responsibility for having the experience, then at least you have a chance to also take responsibility for removing it or learning from it. If you’re in some small (perhaps unknown) way responsible for that migraine headache or that depressed feeling, then you can go to work to remove it or discover what its message is for you. If, on the other hand, someone or something else is responsible in your mind, then of course you’ll have to wait until they change for you to get better. And that is unlikely to occur. So you go home with nothing and are left with nothing when peace is really on the other side of the coin.

Affirmation-Forgiveness2

Step 3: Release the Past – Be Present

Forgiveness of yourself and of others will release you from the prison of the past.

Only in your present moment can you create your future. If you are holding onto the past, you cannot be in the present. How can you be happy in this moment if you continue to choose to think angry and resentful thoughts?

Thoughts of bitterness cannot create joy, no matter how justified you feel you are, no matter what they did, if you insist on holding on to the past then you will never be free.

When you do not flow freely with life in the present moment, it usually means you are holding onto a past moment. It can be regret, sadness, hurt, fear, or guilt, blame, anger, resentment, and sometimes a desire for revenge. Each state comes from a refusal to let go and come into the present moment.

Step 4: Refrain from Judgement

When you stop judging and simply become an observer, you will know  inner peace. With that sense of inner peace, you’ll find yourself happier and free of the negative energy of resentment. A bonus is that you’ll find that others are much more attracted to you. A peaceful person attracts peaceful energy.

My criticism and condemnation of the thoughts, feelings, and behavior of others—regardless of how right anForgiveness Loving the inner childd moral my human self-convinces me it is—is a step away from God-realization. And it is God-consciousness that allows for my wishes to be fulfilled, as long as they are aligned with my Source of being. I can come up with a long list of reasons why I should be judgmental and condemnatory toward another of God’s children and why, damn it, I am right. Yet if I want to perfect my own world—and I so want to do so—then I must substitute love for these judgments.

Step 5: Let Go

What causes annoyance and anger after a dispute? The generic response would be a laundry list detailing why the other person was wrong and how illogically and unreasonably they behaved, concluding with something like, “I have a right to be upset when my [daughter, mother-in-law, ex-husband, boss, or whomever you’re thinking of] speaks to  me that way!”

Rather than attempting to dominate with your forcefulness, be like water: flow everywhere there’s an opening. Soften your hard edges by being more tolerant of contrary opinions. Interfere less, and substitute listening for directing and telling. When someone offers you their viewpoint, try responding with: “I’ve never considered that before—thank you. I’ll give it some thought.”Hay House Clearance

Step 6: Choose to think thoughts that make you feel good right now

The act of forgiveness happens in your own mind, it really has nothing to do with the other person. The reality of true forgiveness lies in setting ourselves free from holding onto the pain. It is simply an act of releasing yourself from the negative energy. You forgive them and release them.

You can choose to think thoughts that make you feel good right now. You can choose to practice thinking thoughts that create a positive today and tomorrow. Know that you will be creating thinking habits that will serve you well forever.

You have a choice. You can choose to stay stuck and bitter or you can do yourself a favor by willingly forgiving the past and let it go and move on to create a joyous, fulfilling life. You have the freedom to make life anything you want it to be because you have freedom of choice.

The Answer Is You

In this inspiring video, visionary teacher Michael Bernard Beckwith delves deep into practical methods for manifesting prosperity and health, living a rich and fulfilling life, understanding universal laws and gaining greater self-awareness, courage, and self-reliance.

The Answer is Still You

Michael ask us to celebrate and explore all our human potential and that within you is the answer. When you keep on asking the right question, you will discover you knew the answer all the time.

Your not the body, you have a body. Your not the mind, you have a mind. You can make choices that liberate you. Choice is a function of ever expanding awareness. You are here to let it go.

You no longer have to be a victim to anything, that thru your expanded awareness of this dynamic and magnificent presence, you get to make a choice, to become more yourself and anchor on earth in time and space the eternal qualities of Love and Beauty and of well-being.Liberating Choices

Who you are is a unique emanation of something so wonderful and so magnificent that by means of you, want to come into expression, wants to reveal itself. And yet these transcendent yet eminent qualities that we call Love, and that we call Beauty, and that we call harmonizing Prosperity, and that we call abundance, that we call living intelligence.

Set the Conditions for the Seed to Grow

You take a little seed, and in this seed is a template and idea, called the rose bush. This particular seed can be tossed about on the winds, for a long period of time. And then a number of years later it finally found itself in the fertile soil. When it hit that soil, and it began to rain, and there was proper nutrition and sunlight, and all the things necessary, that seed began to grow into a magnificent rose bush.

The idea being that within that seed is a perfect pattern already placed there, not in the future, not in the past, but in the newness of that moment that instant all ready there. And when the condition was met that seed became its full potential.

There are seeds within you, ideas within you, vision within you. And when conditions are met, no matter what other condition that occurred in the past, it doesn’t matter on anything that is going on outside of you.

Create your own conditions within your mind, your potential will rise up and express itself and you will become more yourself. All of these qualities are within you now!

The moment the condition was met, in that instant the seed began to grow, the high potential within you will rise.On Demand Courses

You are going to create the condition within yourself, with guidelines that you will practice, so that you no longer are thinking that your good is outside of yourself, you are no longer thinking that it is in the future, you are no longer thinking that someone else has it, you are no longer thinking that if everything outside would just come together I would be Happy.

Worry-free diet: “Grateful Fruit”

We want to wake up every single day in Gratitude for everything that we already have and we want to begin to use what we have … take an inventory in your life of every good and perfect thing that you already have, every gift, every capacity within you, develop and awareness of what you have

Michael’s Worry-free diet includes “Grateful Fruit”:

Every single day of your life, you develop the mindset and Heartset of waking up and going on a hunt to look for what you can be grateful for, you go on a hunt to look for what you can be thankful for and how you live in appreciation. You begin to live this gratitude to such a level that you begin to discover that there is more and more things to be grateful for until you mind becomes an avenue of awareness of gratitude it becomes your new Heartset it becomes your new point of reference and because of that gratitude and thanksgiving more and more can begin to flow into your life.

There are a couple of stages of gratitude. One stage to become grateful for what you have, it’s a beautiful thing. In stage two you become grateful for the negativity in your life. That’s a hard one. Bad things happen, you say Thank You. I’m so glad this is taking place, why, because you live in a progressive universe. It is coming into your life to help you grow. If you become grateful in the midst of seeming negativity you join forces with the progress universe, you learn your lessons faster, you harvest your blessings to an ever increasing level and you spin into a greater awareness of the infinite possibilities within you.

Gratitude for simply being alive, gratitude not attached to anything. This is the gratitude that aligns you with all of nature. Right now all of nature is giving thanks and is grateful for existing, period!

Three Questions to Ask on a Regular Basis

Three questions you want to ask yourself on a regular basis, to live with:

  1. How can I grow? Because you are an evolving, unique being, every day you want to have an insight, a revelation. You’ve practiced something new, you’ve tried something new, so that you can become more of yourself and express yourself better.
  2. What can I give? Ask this question, the Universe fills your hands with more than you can handle.
  3. What can I celebrate? Nature is in celebration for simply being in existence, celebrating constantly. As you recognize things to celebrate, you lift your octave and what happens is you keep bringing thing into your life’s experience, you keep creating, you keep manifesting, more and more things to celebrate.

These Heartsets and Mindsets exist for you to discover that answer is you, to the question of more prosperity, more health, right relationships, abundance, and expansion in times of contraction. The answer is you, not outside of you, not someone else. The Answer Is You!!

Today is the beginning of a new life, say yes to it.Hay House Clearance

Lessons on Life – The Empty Pickle Jar

A Lesson On LifeThis story has been told before, however this time it was used to demonstrate time as it relates to priorities. Lesson learned, put time into the big stuff first.  Remember, every day is a gift… and the quality of your life is your gift to yourself. And there is always room for chocolate.

Lessons on Life – The Empty Pickle Jar

A professor stood before his philosophy class holding a large empty pickle jar. When the class began he proceeded to fill the jar with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course the sand filled up everything else. He asked once again if the jar was full. They responded with a unanimous “yes.”

The professor then produced a bottle of chocolate milk from under the table. He poured it into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

“Now” said the professor, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.”

The golf balls are the important things… your FAMILY, and CHILDREN, your HEALTH, and FRIENDS.

The pebbles are the other things that matter… like your JOB, your HOME, your CAR. The sand is everything else, the small stuff.

If you put the sand into the jar first, there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that make you happy. Play with your children, get regular checkups, enjoy dinner with friends and family. There will always be time to clean the house.

Take care of the golf balls first, the things that really matter. Set your priorities… the rest is just sand.

One student asked, “what about the chocolate milk?” The professor responded, “No matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for chocolate.”

Remember, every day is a gift… and the quality of your life is your gift to yourself.

The Science of Happiness – An Experiment in Gratitude

What makes you happy? Have you ever wondered why? Join Soul Pancake as they take an experimental approach on what makes people happier.

What makes you happy? Having fun, delicious food, hanging out with friends, making money?

Consider this, psychologist have scientifically proven that one of the greatest contributing factors to overall happiness in your life is how much gratitude you show.

Check out the study here!

Soul Pancake decided to perform the test themselves. They gather a selection of volunteers. First they took a test to gain a good idea of their current level of happiness. Then they were asked to close their eyes and to think of someone who was really influential in their lives, someone did something really amazing or important for them. They wrote down as much as they could about why this person was so important. Then they really put them on the spot and tried to get them to call that person and read what they wrote about them.

Now for those who actually made the phone call and personally expressed their gratitude, happiness increased from 4 to 19%.

So either way, expressing your gratitude will make you a happier person.

The most interesting outcome of the experiment, the person who experienced the biggest jump in happiness was least happiest person who participated. That means if you are having a particularly tough time, trying this out will more likely have a greater impact on you.
